Terms

The short version: playing is free, your files stay yours and stay private, and you can leave with everything you brought.

In force since November 2, 2026.

1. Who we are

Fretfall is run by Fretfall, an independent project, reached at hello@fretfall.com ("we"). You, the person using it, are a Musician. By using Fretfall you agree to these terms; if you do not, please do not use it.

2. What Fretfall is

Fretfall is a note highway for guitar and bass that runs in your browser. It plays pieces from our Catalog and files you open from your own disk, lets you correct them with Fixes, and keeps a Practice record: your Plays, the Status of each Song, and your Setlists. All of that is free.

  • Without an account. A file you open is read by your browser and kept in that browser, and is never uploaded. Your Practice record is kept in that browser only. If you clear the browser's data, both are gone; we cannot bring them back, because we never had them.
  • With a free account. Your Practice record is kept on our servers and follows you to every device you sign in on. Your Library stays on each device, files included.
  • As a Supporter. Your Library is kept in the cloud as well, on every device.

3. Your files

Files are uploaded only if you are a Supporter. Everything you upload remains yours. You give us only the permission we need to store your files and hand them back to you on your devices. We do not share them with anyone, we do not look inside them, and our servers never open them: your browser reads a file and tells us its title, artist, Parts, tuning and length, so that your Library can be listed.

Nobody but you can play or download your files. That includes us: the admin area shows titles and sizes, for support and for copyright notices, and has no way to open a file. If two Musicians upload the same file, it is stored twice, on purpose.

You may upload only what you have the right to use: music you wrote, files you bought or were licensed, or works in the public domain. You are responsible for what you upload.

Fretfall opens Guitar Pro, MusicXML and Frett files. It does not open files in a Protected format, which is one that can only be read with keys that are not ours.

4. What you may not do

  • Upload files you have no right to use, or use Fretfall to pass files to other people.
  • Share your sign-in, or try to reach another Musician's Library.
  • Attack, overload or probe the service, or get around its limits.
  • Copy the Catalog in bulk by automated means. Each piece names its source and licence.

5. Supporters

Being a Supporter costs $5 a month or $40 a year and renews at the end of each period until you stop. It gives you a cloud Library of 500 MB, in files of up to 50 MB each, and helps keep Fretfall running.

Payment happens on Stripe's checkout page. Stripe is the seller of record: the company named on your receipt, which charges any VAT or sales tax that applies to you and handles receipts, refunds and disputes under its own terms. Your card statement shows a charge beginning LINK.COM*, and Stripe's Link calls it Sold through Link; some banks shorten or reword it. Stripe may refund a payment within 60 days at its own judgement.

If you are a consumer in a country that gives you a right to withdraw from an online purchase, that right is not limited by these terms. Write to hello@fretfall.com and we will see that you get your money back.

If the price changes, we tell you by email at least 30 days before your next renewal, and the new price applies only from that renewal. You can stop being a Supporter before then, from the Supporter page in your account, and never pay the new price.

6. Cancelling, and what happens after

You can stop at any time from the Supporter page in your account. You keep everything until the period you paid for ends. A failed payment is not a cancellation: Stripe tries again first.

When you are no longer a Supporter, your cloud Library is Locked: its Versions can be downloaded but not played or added to. We email you the date it locked and the date its files will be deleted, which is 30 days later, and we warn you again seven days before. After that the files are deleted for good. Your Practice record is not deleted: it stays on your devices and in your account, and becoming a Supporter again brings back everything that is still there.

You can download any file you uploaded, unchanged, at any time, while you are a Supporter and while your Library is Locked.

7. Deleting your account

You can delete your account from your account page. That removes your files, your Practice record on our servers and your sign-in, and cancels your payments as a Supporter. There is no undo.

8. Copyright complaints

If a rights holder tells us that a file in a Library or a piece in the Catalog infringes their rights, we follow the process on the takedown page: we may remove the file, we record that we did, and we email the Musician concerned with the reason.

We end the accounts of Musicians who infringe repeatedly. As a rule that means a second valid notice that was not successfully disputed. No refund is owed for the rest of a period ended this way.

9. The Catalog

The Catalog holds pieces that are in the public domain, taken from the PDMX collection; the credits page names it and its licence. You may play them and add them to your Library. If you believe a piece does not belong there, tell us through the takedown page.

10. Changes and availability

We work to keep Fretfall running and your files safe, and we keep backups, but we do not promise that it is always available or free of errors, and we may change or remove features. Keep your own copies of files that matter to you: the download is always there for that.

11. Liability

We are liable without limit for damage we cause intentionally or through gross negligence. For anything else, as far as the law allows, our liability is excluded, and in any case limited to what you paid us in the twelve months before the damage. The free part of Fretfall is provided as it is.

12. Ending it from our side

We may suspend or end an account that breaks these terms. Unless the breach is serious, we warn you first. If we end a Supporter's account for any reason other than a breach, you get back what you paid for the time you cannot use, and you get 30 days to download your files.

13. Changes to these terms

If we change these terms in a way that matters, we email every Musician with an account at least 30 days before the change takes effect — a free account and a Supporter's alike. If you do not agree, you can leave before then.

14. Law and courts

Swiss law applies. If you are a consumer, rights that the law of your own country gives you and that cannot be contracted away stay as they are, and you may also sue where you live.
