Credits
Fretfall stands on the work of others. This is whose, and under which licence — everything we serve from this origin, with the notice that ships beside it.
These attributions cover what we serve today.
The Catalog: PDMX
Apart from Fretfall’s own arrangements, the pieces in the Catalog come from PDMX: A Large-Scale Public Domain MusicXML Dataset for Symbolic Music Processing, by Phillip Long, Zachary Novack, Taylor Berg-Kirkpatrick and Julian McAuley. The collection is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) and is published at zenodo.org/records/15571083.
What we changed: we took only scores with a part for guitar or bass whose composer died before 1926 or is traditional or anonymous, reviewed each one by hand, and show only that Part. Each piece keeps the link to its source and its own licence (public domain or CC0).
The gear photographs
The gear in the Shop is photographed by musicians and collectors who share their pictures on Wikimedia Commons and Flickr, under Creative Commons licences (CC BY and CC BY-SA, some CC0 or public domain). Each photograph is listed with its photographer, its licence and its source on the Shop’s photo credits. What we changed: we cut each one out from its background and scaled it to fit the Shop; otherwise they are as their photographers published them.
alphaTab
Guitar Pro and MusicXML files are read, and played when there is no Recording, by alphaTab 1.8.4, © Daniel Kuschny and contributors, under the Mozilla Public License 2.0. We serve it from this origin rather than a CDN, byte for byte as it is published, with its own licence header left in the file. Its source is at github.com/CoderLine/alphaTab.
That header also names the six libraries built into it, and their notices travel with it: TinySoundFont (MIT, © Bernhard Schelling), SFZero (MIT, © Steve Folta), the Haxe Standard Library (MIT, © Haxe Foundation), SharpZipLib (MIT, © SharpZipLib Contributors), NVorbis (MIT, © Andrew Ward) and libvorbis (BSD-3-Clause, © Xiph.Org Foundation).
The sound font
The synth plays through sonivox.sf2, © 2004–2006 Sonic Network Inc., under the Apache License 2.0. It ships with alphaTab and we serve the whole bank unchanged, with its licence beside it: soundfont/LICENSE.
The Player
The note highway itself is @fretfall/player, which we publish under the MIT licence.
The music fonts
The noteheads, clefs and accidentals are drawn with two fonts we serve from this origin, both under the SIL Open Font License 1.1:
- Bravura, © 2015 Steinberg Media Technologies GmbH, with Reserved Font Name “Bravura”. Bravura is also a registered trademark of Steinberg Media Technologies GmbH. We serve it exactly as alphaTab publishes it, with its licence beside it: Bravura-OFL.txt.
- Noto Music, © 2022 The Noto Project Authors. What we serve is a subset of it, cut down to the glyphs the notation view draws, with its licence beside it: noto-music-OFL.txt.
Typefaces
The three faces the site is set in are fetched when Fretfall is built and served from this origin as files, the same as the fonts above, so they are ours to attribute too. All three are under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, and because nothing puts a notice beside them we serve one:
- Big Shoulders by Patric King, © 2019 The Big Shoulders Project Authors: big-shoulders-OFL.txt.
- Instrument Sans by Instrument, © 2022 The Instrument Sans Project Authors: instrument-sans-OFL.txt.
- Martian Mono by Evil Martians, © 2021 The Martian Mono Project Authors: martian-mono-OFL.txt.
A highway theme may ask for further families on top of these, and those the browser fetches from Google Fonts as it draws. We pass none of them on.
And the rest
The site is built with Next.js, React, Tailwind CSS, Radix, cmdk, Sonner, Lucide icons, tRPC, Better Auth, Drizzle and NestJS, all open source. Thank you.
